Fact Check: New IDs DON'T Expire In 2030 At Latest Because Of Mysterious Plan New ID Rules

Do new IDs expire in 2030 at the latest because of a mysterious plan for that year? No, that's not true: The validity period of Hungarian ID cards has been six years since 2016.

The claim appeared in a video on TikTok (archived here) published by usseal2222 on August 2, 2023, under the title (translated from Hungarian to English by Lead Stories staff):

Those who recently renewed their IDs, please check the expiry date as I only received it for 7 years instead of the usual 10 which is very interesting! There is a suspicion that no one gets an ID for later than 2030! Again, what is their plan for 2030, really.

The TikTok video shows a screenshot of a viral post on Facebook from August, 1, 2023. The author of that post wrote (translation from Hungarian to English by Lead Stories staff): "And why? Because as all the globalists and OV [Prime Minister Viktor Orban] said that we will be very happy by 2030."

The World Economic Forum put out a video in 2016 called "8 predictions for the world in 2030" (see screenshot below). Since then, people on social media have circulated a clip from that video, calling it "the WEF's stated goals." Lead Stories debunked several such conspiracy theories.

On January 1, 2016, Hungary introduced e-ID cards with a validity of six years. All the ID cards given out since that day contain a chip meant to make administration easier. People can e-sign documents with it or buy prescription medicine without a printed prescription, for example.

The CXXX law of 2015, which introduced the e-card, also changed the validity period of ID cards from 10 to six years. Since January 1, 2016, new ID cards of people older than 18 expire on the first birthday of the cardholder after the six years. This means that no one in Hungary who got a new ID in 2023 can have a card that expires later than 2030.
